Lesson 1: Basic knowledge and demographics of the yachting industry

When you hear the word "yachting," what do you picture?

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this lesson is to answer some basic questions so you can become familiar with the expectations of the industry and the role.

  1. What should/can you expect?
  2. How do you get a job on a yacht?
  3. What are the benefits and challenges of this career?
  4. Is this a good fit for you?

What should you expect of the industry?

Working on yachts is a lot of fun, but it also involves a lot of hard work. In some cases, you may be asked to work extended hours to complete your tasks, and at other times, you’ll have more free time. This may seem daunting, but if you’re not scared of hard work, long hours, living in confined quarters and a bit of stress here and there, it is a great way to travel and earn money simultaneously. Some people choose to make a life of it, and others do it to take a break and find new angles in life. In fact, some people who started their lives together at sea later returned to yachting after building careers, starting families, and exploring life ashore—drawn back by the unique lifestyle onboard a yacht.

How do you get a job on a yacht?

It is not that easy to get a job on board a yacht, unless you have great experience or a friendly connection somewhere. The reason you are taking this course is to learn a skill that will stand you in good stead when applying for a position on any vessel. Even a small amount of experience can give you a strong edge over other applicants, and the more diverse your skills, the greater your chances of landing the position.

What are the benefits and challenges?

As with any industry, there are positives and negatives, and your mindset determines whether you will succeed or fail.
